About Us
We also understand that having your pet undergo surgery can be distressing. In order to give your pet the finest care possible, we want to reassure you that they are in good hands.
For each patient, a specific anesthetic protocol is created. In addition to carefully choosing the sedatives that will be used to induce anesthesia, painkillers, antibiotics, and fluid therapy during surgery to assist in maintaining healthy blood pressure are also parts of this individualized strategy.
We will keep you informed of all you need to know before, during, and following your pet’s surgery. It is our intention to make everything go well and to take away any anxiety or tension associated with having surgery. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right away if you have any queries, remarks, or worries.

What do you specialize in?
At HCVSS, we specialize in elective orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures.
What do you love about your servicing area?
We love the city of Boerne and being surrounded by the beauty of the Hill Country. It’s a small town with some of the most thoughtful and compassionate people. We are conveniently located, within just a short drive, from our neighboring towns–San Antonio, Fredericksburg, and New Braunfels–just to name a few of the wonderful places close by.
We also receive referrals from outlying surrounding areas down to the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, as far out west as El Paso, and as far north as Lubbock, Texas.
Small background about the owner or head DVM
Dr. Harper grew up in South Texas in a town called Edinburg. He later graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and went on to complete an internship in Littleton, Colorado, and his surgical residency at Auburn University. Dr. Harper moved back to Texas and its beautiful Hill Country to further his knowledge and experience by training under Dr. Andy Baker and Dr. Don Hulse. It was during this time; he found the dramatic need for specialty surgery to be offered in-house at general veterinary practices. For the past 12 years, Dr. Harper has served over 100 referring hospitals in San Antonio and the surrounding area, performing over 1200 surgical procedures every year.
In 2023, Dr. Harper helped organize a group of local veterinarians to help in founding and beginning Hill Country Animal Emergency Hospital. HCAEH will serve the region and HCVSS by providing overnight and weekend emergency and patient care to patients from HCVSS.
At the same time as helping to organize HCAEH, Hill Country Veterinary Surgical Specialty was founded as an elective-only surgical center to provide advanced specialized procedures in order to improve the quality of care and availability for regional and outlying pet owners.
